ALTAVISTA MOMENTUM MOUNTS AS KEY MILESTONES ARE MET

Focused Search Leader Makes Significant Product Improvements,
Secures Important Customer Wins and Adds Chief Marketing Officer

PALO ALTO, Calif.,June 12, 2002 - AltaVista Company, a leading global provider of search services and software and a majority-owned operating company of CMGI, Inc. (Nasdaq: CMGI) today announced several major milestones reached in the third quarter of its fiscal 2002. In the fiscal quarter ended April 30, 2002, the company successfully launched key relevancy and freshness initiatives, signed major sponsorship deals with CarsDirect.com and American Singles/MatchNet Plc., and named Apple Computer veteran Fred Bullock Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer for its Internet division.

Additional milestones achieved by AltaVista's Internet division include:

  • Improved index freshness, re-crawling valuable educational, governmental, non-profit and non-commerce-based sites every six hours and tapping 2,700 editorial news sources every 15 minutes;
  • Refined ranking algorithm, delivering relevant results fast;
  • Added major AltaVista Web Marketing Services™ accounts, closing the quarter with more than 23,000 customers worldwide;
  • Signed major global advertisers, including Eli Lilly, BankOne, Microsoft and LandRover;
  • Signed a strategic distribution deal with Tiscali across 12 European markets;
  • Launched AltaVista Web Marketing Services products and reseller program in Germany, Italy, France, UK and Australia, adding several customers and resellers;
  • Signed agreements with the European affiliates of Overture Services, Inc.'s to display its 'Pay-For-Performance' search listings above the Web search results on AltaVista's Germany and UK search sites;
  • Launched enhanced multimedia index that brows by more than 800 breaking news images from around the world everyday;

Key Milestones achieved by AltaVista's software division include:

  • Released AltaVista Enterprise Search™ 2.0 and its update on all supported platforms (NT, Solaris, Tru64, Linux, HP-UX, AIX);
  • Released the Internationalization Add-On Kit for AltaVista AutoCategorizer™ for all supported platforms; and
  • Continued sales momentum in the global 2000 enterprise market with customer wins in the telecommunications, financial services, healthcare and automotive industries across Europe and the Americas.

Since the close of the quarter, AltaVista has also signed a one-year agreement through which Overture Services, Inc. will distribute its 'Pay-For-Performance' search listings to the 'Products and Services' section on AltaVista's North American sites. Under the terms of these agreements, AltaVista and Overture share the revenue resulting from user click-thrus to Overture's customers' Web sites from www.altavista.com and www.altavista.ca search results pages.
